I am voluntarily taking the day off today (being self employed this means I will lose a day’s pay) to attend a Remembrance ceremony.
When I first moved to Toronto in the mid-80’s from Newfoundland I was shocked when I got my first job and found out I would be starting work on November 11th. Two years later I started my second job on - November 11 th.
Coming from Newfoundland where Remembrance Day is almost sacred I never could quite get this. Today I still don’t.
Why Remembrance day is not a national statutory holiday is quite beyond me. And I don’t buy any of that stop for a minute at 11 o clock bs - like anyone really does that at work.
If there is one day we can stop our busy lives and think of a higher cause it is this one.

Similarly, I moved to Toronto from Stephenville in 1986 and found that the reverence to Armistice Day/ Remembrance Day shown in Newfoundland was muted here. Nevertheless, there are many who keep the faith and we will join together at the Old City Hall Cenotaph in Toronto this morning, come rain snow or the howling canyon winds of Bay Street.
