The Blogosphere on the Murder of 4 RCMP officers ( I intend to add more over the course of the day):

From Joe Cool:

I have avoided political commentary here as there are so many others doing it so much better. BUT, this is ridiculous! It’s time to get rid of organized crime in this country. Stamp it out completely. Too many innocent people are being assaulted, victimized and hurt over this so-called harmless drug. It is this harmless drug that is being traded for crack cocaine and heroin and hurting even more people

From Kelso’s Mind in a Nutshell

aww
that is sad! 4 RCMP officers died doing a drug raid thingy! Apparently the ppl who grow majiwana (sp) like set up booby traps and stuff and they died! AWWW so you should STOP DOING DRUGS!!then ppl wouldn’t have to go on raids and ppl wouldn’t die and it’s better for you!

From the BC Marijuana Party

These tragic and senseless deaths could have been prevented. Prohibition dramatically increases the amount of violence and danger because of the creation of the black market. Of course, there are no excuses for, nor should there be any tolerance of, violence and murder. But, as a society, we can take on the responsibility for minimizing the conditions that give rise to that violence, and to those deaths.

From the Blog of the Future:

This is pathetic for a number of reasons:

1. They lost 4 men to a bunch of skeevy stoners, what a bunch of losers. “Its just like a fucking canuck to bring a horse to a gun fight.” ~Sean Connery

2. Its one of the bloodiest days in Mounty history, which means they have never really tried to do anything other than stop bears from stealing picnic lunches and brutally repress our unarmed Inuit brothers. Say what you will about the FBI, but at least they took out Al Capone, John Dillinger, and Marilyn Monroe.

3. They are candadian.

4. There are more reasons, but Id prefer not to waste my time thinking about them. Im glad that they bailed on the Reagan Missile Defense Sheild, they deserve to get nuked by North Korea.

PS - I just searched for ‘canuck’ on the internet. I found this link about the canadian national hero - Johnny Canuck. He is the Candian Captain America, invented to fight the Nazis, except that he has no super powers…fucking canadians, why cant they wear jeans jackets and rape moose on someone else’s continent?

Actually I think we all know what is pathetic here.

From Jay Currie

This is first a horrible tragedy. These were our guys. Our Mounties. The RCMP is part of and at the heart of communities throughout Canada. To lose one member is an outrage. But four men? To a loner busting a grow op?

For the moment the senseless waste of lives will be the story. As it should be. Then there has to be an investigation of how four armed and trained men could possibly have been put at such risk.

This is not the time for that investigation; but the deaths of four Mounties suggests something is fundamentally wrong with the force which sent them into harm’s way.

Pace Minister McLellan - this is not about grow ops. It is about a police operation gone horribly wrong. The gun which killed them was fired by a man who was known to the police, who had been in prison. This was not, or should not, have been an operation undertaken without full intelligence, proper surveilance and enough planning to ensure the safety of the members involved.

The memory of those members demands a full inquiry.

Graham at Left News says:

The way to stop these grow-ops would be for the government to legalize and control marijuana and use that money to decrease use (if that is what people want). If it comes to be an all out war we are fighting then it is time to change the rules.

I agree with Graham btw.

Blibber:

Now in Canada you could probably rape a women or molest a child and not suffer nearly as tough of a sentence as somebody caught with a small grow lab.

Actually Blibber that is not true. Grow ops owners typically do very light sentances. Try committing all three crimes and see which one you get the most time for.

More sympathy from America:

Ah, Canada. The gun-free, crime-free socialist utopia to the north, who set the example for the knuckledragging Americans to follow. Why, if we simply implemented some of their statist welfare policies, and legalized marijuana like they have, we’d probably cut down on sd much of the crime we experience here, like police shootouts with drug dealers.

Bill Doskoch

there’s a large demand for marijuana, and at a price high enough to make enormous profits possible.

Trying to convince people not to smoke pot doesn’t appear to be an effective way to reduce demand. If it was, we wouldn’t have grow ops.

And so long as the profit potential remains extremely high, I don’t think increased penalties for those small numbers who get caught will have much of an impact in reducing supply.

Is the answer to take supply out of the hands of criminals?

It’s a debate society might want to have

Nick Fowler has an interesting take:

I understand that people like the idea of smoking pot. I respect people’s ability to lobby the government to effect changes to the laws surrounding it. I even see where the possible decriminalization of pot might be a good idea in Canada. I do not however respect when people smoke pot now, when it is against the law, and especially when they haven’t considered the full implications of their actions.

Law exists for a reason, to preserve order within society. Some laws are just, some are arguably not. However in order for the social contract to work, we have to obey all laws, even those we don’t agree with. People tell me smoking pot doesn’t hurt me or anyone else. Well yes, if it were decriminalized or legalized pot in and of itself will have about the same harm on society as a cigarette. However, if you smoke pot, in a society that has deemed it illegal then you are very realistically hurting a lot of people. You buy pot for a guy, who buys it from another guy, who produces it in his house or other operation.

Maybe that guy is involved with a gang and that money goes towards other illegal purchases (guns, etc.) Maybe not. Maybe they just have a grow operation. But it is still against the law and the police are still required to investigate. Everytime police have to investigate a grow operation that’s another use of public funding that could be put elsewhere. And there is always the risk that when police go in to bust the of they could get hurt or killed

I’m giving the last word to amathaunta

These were good Canadians doing our country good. Give them a moment.

Amen to that.
